Keep Bed Bugs Out Of Your Home

Everyone's been hearing about bed bugs on the news lately. Bed bugs are something that everyone thinks is a thing of the past but lately they have been making a resurgence in hotels and homes across the country. Now people have once again become vigilant about protecting themselves against bed bugs because once you get them, it's hard to get rid of them.

These small bugs are often mistaken for cockroaches and there are some similarities. They are about .25 inch in length and are brownish in color. Flat and oval in shape, these bugs get their nourishment by feeding on the blood of animals, including people. They get around by crawling and luckily for us, they can't fly. It was as recent as the 1960s when bed bugs were very common in the United States. Once people started using DDT the bed bug problem went away. With modern regulations about the use of hazardous chemicals and the great upswing in travel, bed bugs have once again come back to this country.

Even though they're called bed bugs, these crawling insects can live in any part of your home or place of work. Basically, anywhere you find people is a good place for a bed bug infestation and the more crowded the better. We usually think of the typical bed bug infestation as one that takes place in a dirty, disheveled home but bed bugs can live in very clean and tidy environments. Trash and discarded food don't entice a bed bug, only the blood of warm blooded animals. Bed bugs can survive for several months without feeding so leaving a house vacant for long periods of time won't get rid of them.

You won't usually see bud bugs crawling around on the surface of your bed of furniture. Part of their survival strategy is to keep to the cracks and crevices where they aren't easy to detect. Beds, curtains, carpets and even the seams in wallpaper are all places where bed bugs like to hide. They then come out at night to feed. Feeding usually only takes about 10 minutes and once they have fed they don't need to feed again for another three to four days. Luckily, the bite of a bed bug is not known to transmit diseases like the bite of a mosquito. Once gorged with blood they burst quite easily under pressure and coming in contact with the blood that may be infected can put you at risk of infection as well.

So besides staying at home, what can you do to minimize your risk of bed bug infestation? When staying in hotels be sure to put your suitcase on the rack that's usually provided and not on the bed or carpet. This goes for when your return home as well. It's common for people to put their suitcase on their bed to unpack and this is a perfect opportunity for any bed bugs that did hitch a ride to find their next home. After returning home make sure you wash all of your clothes and dry them in a very hot dryer. Freezing also works but most people don't have a freezer that big.

If you do find out that you have become infested with bed bugs, it's wise to let a trained professional take care of eradication. They know where to look and what kind of measures to take to clear your house of the pests. Trying to use bug spray or other pesticides end up hurting you more than the bugs. It may take a while but a professional can make sure that your home is once again bed bug free.
