Keep Cool This Summer: Cut Costs

Keeping cool in summer can be costly, both to your hip pocket and the environment

. However putting a few simple things in place in your home or business will keep you cool this summer, and slash your energy costs. Easy purchases such as curtains, awnings and fans have low continuing costs compared to air conditioners - plus they are more environmentally friendly! We've put together a mini review on each option, with some extra tips on keeping your home cool for you to read and apply to your home this summer.

Fans

Using a fan is one way to cool down that is both cheap, and relatively environmentally friendly. Plus fans are portable - so you can use them in whichever part of your home you are in, not wasting cooling on unused areas.

Warm Up A/C

Turn your a/c up a few degrees. If used in conjunction with awnings, blinds, fans and thick curtains, you shouldn't need your air conditioner working on full blast. Each degree lower can add ten cents to the cost per hour. Not only will this save you hundreds of dollars, you will be causing less harm to the environment. Plus, it doesn't have to run continuously with the cool air being trapped inside by the blinds and curtains.

Awnings

Starting with the western facing side of your home or business, consider installing awnings to lower the temperature within your building. This will work in conjunction with your air-conditioning or cooling system, decreasing the energy output you will need from your unit and requiring you to run it for fewer hours per day. This in turn is better for the environment, as air conditioners have a high impact on pollution generation.

Close Doors

Closing doors to sections of your home or business you are not using will lower the area you need to cool, and in turn lower the strength of cooling devices necessary. Closing windows is also important in making sure you aren't letting in more hot air. (Some evaporative cooling air conditioners require your windows to remain open, so check this first before sectioning off your home in this way)

Thick Curtains and Blinds

A window can attract ten times more heat than an insulated wall, causing huge amounts of heat to enter your building. Placing thick curtains or blinds on these windows can lower this effect drastically, keeping you cool with no energy cost whatsoever. Consider automatic sun blinds, which work from the outside of your window to prevent unnecessary heating of your home.

Save It For Later

Activities that will heat up your home such as cooking or washing can often be saved for the afternoon, or even night, when it is much cooler. Waiting until then to get these things done means your house temperature won't be unnecessarily raised.
