Keep It Simple And You Will Achieve Your Goals

I once worked at a company who organised training seminars. At the back of the training room, tables were set up with one table displaying books, one audio cd's and another posters. If someone wanted to buy a CD, a book and then a poster, they had to queue up at each table in turn where a sales form was filled in and payment taken. If you wanted to purchase items from all three categories, this meant queuing up 3 times for 3 transactions. You then would have to wait to take possession of your goods.

After a book had been stolen one time, a policy was introduced where all the merchandise was kept securely locked in a van parked a hundred yards away from the training room.

Following the sales session someone would take all the sales forms to the van then proceed to pick the orders which were then ferried to the training room. This took several trips with carrier bags.

At the end of the day people would queue up in 3 lines to receive their goods in separate bags.

The end result was that things were sold, money was made, but the inefficient procedures resulted in lots of wasted time. All the organisers had to do to simplify things was to put all the tables together, place stock on each of them, allow people to choose what they want, then take payment for the combined order before putting the goods in a bag. Simple!

There is a saying that goes 'as the crow flies'. If you look at a map and locate town A then locate town B you find that the shortest way to get from A to B is a straight line. If you were a crow then you could just fly straight from A to B. If you are on a cycle,however, then you must follow the roads which may involve many bends and turns and although a cycle travels go faster, the crow will probably arrive there first.

When it come to life do you follow the way of the crow or the cycle? If you have a goal then it makes sense to find the shortest way to achieve your goal. Unfortunately many of us, like the organisers of the sales at the training day, go on their rusty old cycles and follow a twisting and turning route to arrive at their goals.

Why is this? The human mind is capable of understanding complex procedures. Minds can write complicated computer code, get men to the moon, invent incredible machines. Because the mind is capable of understanding complexity, it is easy to forget that sometimes simple is best.

It helps to have goals in life. Perhaps your goal is to lose 12 pounds. This sounds a simple enough goal. Look at all the different diet books out there which can make you feel that losing weight is a complicated process. There is a very simple formula for losing weight:

"Eat less calories and exercise more."

If you follow this formula you will lose weight.

When you set goals for your life, look carefully at your plans to reach your goals. Are you heading towards completing your goals using the simple straight line approach or are you taking the long way round?

Are your actions taking you directly to your goal or are they slowing down your progress?

Keep it simple and you will succeed.
