Keep The Focus On The Quality Of Your Years Rather Than The Number Of Them
The length of time that we get to stay in this world may be relatively fixed but the quality of that time is not. We have much more control that we have previously believed over our functional capabilities and wellness. No matter what your calendar age is you should be concerned with your biological age as it tells how old your body is in respect to the quality of your health and disease status.Factors such as muscular strength and body composition (muscle/fat ratio) are extremely important as one gets older and is the reason why some people are able to remain highly active than others of a similar age. Loss of strength combined with an increase in body fat along with an increased risk of disease used to be accepted as totally age-related and there was nothing we could do about it.But science has uncovered the fact that it is not the passing years that cause the downward spiral that we see all around us, it is 20, 30 or more years of not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity. It is the loss of around one half pound of muscle tissue up to age 50 then this rate doubling that causes many of the problems and it can be so easily reversed.All over body strength, heart and lung function, bone strength, blood pressure, glucose tolerance, cholesterol levels, joint (hips, knees and back) problems, endurance and stamina as well as mental and emotional well-being can all be improved with a proper exercise program. This program must contain mostly strength training exercise preferably set up and monitored by a fitness professional. Time will be lost if the exercises are not done correctly or not enough intensity (degree of effort) is used. The program should be changed every few weeks to keep progress coming. This type of proper exercise aims at directly working the muscles as this tissue is highly active and is where fuel (calories) is burnt for energy. Only strength training can do this as it is intense enough to stimulate 'youth hormones' that will keep you healthy and youthful and protect you from disease.The terrifying diseases that kill millions of people every year in our modern world are not a necessity of existence. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and dozens of others are called 'lifestyle' diseases and they are related to our lifestyles, the way we live our lives. This means what we do and do not do on a daily basis especially in the areas of exercise and nutrition can make a big difference in whether we remain strong, healthy and well or succumb to accelerated aging and degenerative disease.The older you get the more you need to practice self care in the form of proper exercise and good nutrition as a preventative measure so you can squeeze out the highest quality of health as well as the most length of life. After all we only get one shot at it.
