supply which takes over in the event of a power outage, but during the colder months the peace of mind they offer is even more crucial.

Whether they are used in a hospital, airport, office or other building which requires power 24 hours a day, seven days a week, back-up generators provide the essential peace of mind which comes from knowing that a constant power supply is permanently available.

Taking some simple steps to make sure that your back-up generator is working well and has been properly maintained could make a huge difference if the main power source does fail over the winter.

1.Check all the filters to make sure there are no blockages, and change the filters regularly. If the filters become blocked, this can cause the generator to fail.

2.Check the oil and lubricants. Make sure that high quality oil and lubricants are always used, and that the right levels are consistently maintained. When the temperatures drop over the winter, the lubricants must keep the oil flowing so that the liquid doesn"t build up and thicken. This can cause blockages.

3.Keeping quantities of fuel in the storage tanks is a wise move so that the generator could run for a while before needing more fuel. Make sure that the fuel storage tanks are kept clean and can"t allow water to leak in. If water does get inside the tank, the fuel could become contaminated with bacteria which could block the filters, meaning the generator would be at risk of failing.

4.It is vital that coolant is used in the generator, so that the temperature of the generator is regulated while it is being used and it doesn"t overheat. Make sure that the coolant is properly diluted according to the instructions, so that it will not freeze when the temperature drops. If this is not properly maintained, the generator"s radiator and cylinder block could split when the colder weather hits.

5.It is essential that the exhaust system is regularly inspected to ensure that rain water hasn"t got into it. If this does happen, the engine is at risk of becoming flooded and seizing up "" rendering the generator useless.

6.Check the generator"s batteries are in full working order. Inspect the connections are all still functional, and make sure the battery is kept clean so that dirt doesn"t get into the terminals.
