Keep Your Feet Warm This Winter

I love the snow--I even love walking in it..

I love the snow--I even love walking in it... except when my feet wind up getting wet, which leaves me shivering for hours to come unless I get the opportunity to dry them out in front of the heater, and there is certainly little chance of that happening when I have to dash off to work or make it to class.

Regardless of how you feel about snow, you probably feel similarly about the misery of cold, wet feet. So how can you keep your feet snug as a bug in a rug throughout the upcoming winter? Let me give you some tips that have helped me.

The first step is to make sure you have the right shoes! Women in particular are known to sacrifice comfort for fashion, but you need to make sure that you are wearing boots that adequately cover your feet and ankles. Many popular brands put a waterproof coating on their boots, but if not, you can purchase a spray-on protector that will do the same thing.

Consider investing in a pair of high-quality boots made from genuine leather or sheepskin, as these insulate better. If you can't afford genuine animal hide, then at least purchase shoes that are lined. You can often find sheepskin inserts for a fairly low price. Also, make sure that you purchase boots that are large enough to accommodate inserts and/or multiple pairs of socks.

Socks are, of course, essential, but not just any socks. In particularly chilly weather, it is wise to purchase socks that are specially made for winter athletes like skiers and snowboarders.

Layer socks if necessary, but even more importantly, take an extra pair of socks with you in your gym bag, purse, or backpack. That way, you can do a quick-change in the event your shoes, socks, and/or feet do get wet. You may also want to bring along a small towel to treat your feet and boots if they retain any fluid from melted snow.

Ideally, you should wear leggings that overlap with the top of your socks in order to keep wind and cold air from reaching your skin. If you walk a regular path each day, then it would be helpful to try to keep it shoveled so that you don't have to trudge through the knee-deep drifts, which will inevitable soak your jeans and get snow siphoning into your boots.

Of course, this is not always possible, so it might be a good idea to keep a change of shoes and pants in your car, just in case!
