Keep Your Guests Cool This Christmas

The Australian Christmas is far from a 'white' Christmas

. However; although Melbourne is famous for its 'four season in one day', Around Christmas time, Australia experiences some of the hottest days year round. Make sure you celebrate Christmas by combining Australian traditions and the good old Aussie spirit to keep cool, relax by the BBQ and soak up the atmosphere amongst family and friends.

Check out these great tips below for making sure your family and your guests, enjoy, rather than suffer - the great Aussie Summer.

Cook outside - or when it's dark

Cooking on the great Aussie BBQ is a huge part of the Australian Christmas, with many families putting forth a feast to feed many family and friends. However; cooking inside also generates huge amounts of heat inside your home which means that your air conditioner then has to work even harder to counteract. To avoid heating up your home and putting the chef, and others, into sweltering heat - there are a few easy things you can do.

Firstly, consider cooking all of your meats and other products you can, outside. If you are having seafood, you can easily cook it on the barbecue along with the steak and hamburgers. This puts the source of heat outside, rather than in your home. Just make sure the chef has a cool drink, and hopefully a good source of shade! If the barbecue isn't an option, keep cooking to the early morning and night, when it is likely to be the cool!

Eat cold foods

The traditional turkey and ham are suited to a white Christmas, not our boiling days. Consider having your turkey and ham cool, or eat them Christmas Eve. Consider having seafood and salads for your Christmas meal - they are far more suited to the Australian climate. Don't forget to keep yourself, and your guests, hydrated. Keep plenty of cool drinks on hand (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) to make sure everyone keeps as cool as possible.

Service your airconditioner

Getting your air conditioner serviced long in advanced before your guests arrive, should be part of the readying process. A serviced air conditioner will work to its optimum and ensure you aren't left without anything but a fan this Christmas.

Keep doors and windows closed

Your air conditioner will already be under pressure this Christmas, so don't make it work harder than it needs to. Ask guests to keep doors and windows closed while air conditioner is working, so that you keep the cool air in. If you plan to eat outside, turn your air conditioner off while you're out and your home will remain cool, without wasting energy!
