Keeping A Good Mentality
Running can always be a challenge mentally as much as physically
. Here are some tips to get your head going through those long distances.
It is not only a test of your physical strength, but your mind must also be in a good position. Some runners find that their bodies are willing to continue for longer periods of time, but it is too difficult mentally to continue on.
Follow these steps if you are in a mental battle with yourself during your training. Try some positive, uplifting self talk if you are running along or struggling.
Tell yourself that you are not physically tired, that you are only mentally fatigued and you are able to push through it. Tell yourself you are nearing a break or some water in five minutes which will make you feel better.
If you are doing your longest run ever, remind yourself how proud you will feel when you are finished. You just need to avoid any negative talk or thinking that will prevent you from finishing.
You can also break up your run into smaller segments that will make the distance feel much more manageable. For example, if you are running 20 miles, think, okay it is only four five mile runs.
At the start of each new segment, visualize yourself starting out on a new run with fresh legs and a shorter distance to go. Just focus on getting to the end of that segment.
Remember that it is not always easy. If you are doing a long run, remind yourself that it is a very difficult feat.
If it were easy, everyone would do it. So, remind yourself that you are taking on a challenge and the difficulties you face will make your accomplishment all the more worthwhile in the end.
You can also find a Mantra. Picking a short phrase like "one step at a time" that you can play over and over in your head while running can help you stay focused and centered.
It can be your inner motivation when you need it the most. You may already have a favorite phrase to use as a mantra, but if you do not have one, look up some running motivation quotes for inspiration.
You can also use imagery when you hit a rough patch. Try to imagine yourself as an Olympic athlete who is headed towards the finish line.
Envision your running form as smooth, graceful and relaxed, even if it is not. Think of a runner who you really admire and imagine yourself running just like that person.
Play counting games if you run where there are a lot of other runners. You can pick out a specific article of clothing like a white athletic hat to look out for.
Then, count how many runners you see wearing it. If you do a lot of road training, you can also do this with cars of a certain model or color.
You can also make post run plans. Many people enjoy deciding what they want to do after they finish, especially if they are performing in the morning.
You can ponder something basic like what you want to make for dinner if you want. That helps some people organize their days and gives them something to look forward to after they finish.
You can also visualize your race if you are training for something like a marathon. Picture yourself running the course mile by mile until you cross the finish line.
Picture how you might pose for your photo as you run through the finish line. Try to see the clock with your goal time displayed if you have one.
Imagine what you will be thinking as a volunteer puts your race medal around your neck. Think about how it will feel to see your loved ones at the finish line cheering for you.
These can all be strong motivators. You could also try preparing a good playlist of the songs that keep you moving.
This way, just when you need it, an upbeat song can add that extra adrenaline to keep you going. Whatever you do, just make sure your mentality stays positive so you will reach your full potential during your race; and remember to never give up.
