Keeping In Touch With The Past Through Al Ain

Situated close to the Oman border, Al Ain, or the Garden City as it is known

, is the second largest in size in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. The name literally denotes the spring. This in turn is derived from the fact that there were many natural springs which flowed below the city.

In fact the old trickle irrigation system, known as the Falaj, practiced in days of old is still in use today to maximise the use of the natural springs in this desert city.

Much of the citys splendour is due to the massive commitment shown by the first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was born in Al Ain. The city with its 7 oases further enhances its beauty through the lush greenery seen throughout which are kept watered through desalinated or recycled waste water.

The town also plays host to one of Asias best and famous football teams - Al Ain FC, as well as a Go-Kart circuit of International standard. Apart from this the mighty Jebel Hafeet Mountain is a popular tourist attraction with its natural hot spring pools and delightful honeycomb of passages to explore. The mountain view is breathtaking and sunset is a popular time for a visit.

Having been an attractive spot for settlement for thousands of years, it is no surprise that archaeological excavations have founded many ancient forts, and settlements. In fact the area used to be known for camel breeding and camel racing. The Camel Market is still an interesting spot to visit.

The museum, parks, zoo, amusement park, and numerous shops all combine to offer visitors to Al Ain a refreshing and delightful experience.
