It is also very hygienic because it prevents the growth of bacteria and germs.

But just because stainless steel is touted as an "easy to clean" option for appliances, sinks and more, it doesn't mean that it is a "no-clean" kind of thing. It might be a simple process, but there is still a right way and a wrong way to clean a the material.

Let's start with the good: In this case, the "good" refers to the best ways to clean stainless steel.

Regular Cleaning: Regular cleaning should take place after the sink has been used for things like rinsing dishes and straining pasta. A regular will consist only of a bit of soap, warm water and a little sponge action. A nice wipe down to prevent water spots will ensure a gleaming finish.

Fingerprints: If you've ever had a stainless steel refrigerator you know about the fingerprint problem. To clean those stubborn IDs dirtying up the surface use soap or an organic solvent such as acetone and a little warm water to wash and rinse. Another solution is to use a bit of oil olive on a paper towel to wipe down the fingerprints.

Oil or grease: Another common problem with the material are oil and grease marks but there is a slick solution to overcoming these nasty marks. Soften any caked on areas with ammonia, and wash with some acetone or alcohol and rinse well with warm water.

Tough Stains: Some stains just don't go away it seems, but before giving up home, try a specialty cleaning solution such as Jif and scrub with a good rag. Rinse, dry and sparkle.

The Pot Boiled Over Stain: When a stainless steel pot of cooking potatoes boils over, the pot is left with tough to remove war wounds. To get rid of these stains, soak the pot in a bowl with warm water and baking soda and wash with soap and water afterward.

The Dull Down: New appliances sparkle and shine but eventually the dull down will happen. When this happens, use some white or cider vinegar to get them back to top form.

Now for the bad: Not every cleaning solution is fair game with stainless steel. Any scrubbing pads which contain steel can do damage as well as cleaning powders such as Comet. The fibers and abrasive cleaning agents can scratch appliances and surfaces which is not the shiny look a kitchen deserves.

And of course the ugly: The ugly is that without proper maintenance stainless steel surfaces can become contaminated with deposits (such as salt) which will quickly reduce the life of the appliance of fixture. Also, it is crucial to keep surfaces clean when initially installing the appliance or sink because the slightest bit of grime can build up over time if wedged into the nook or cranny of an installation.

With a little time and care, stainless steel products and surfaces will remain like new for many years.
