Keeping Tabs On Your Search Engine Ranking

Search Engines are very useful tools on the Internet

, as when you need to look up something, guaranteed you find results by typing your query into the search box. As an internet marketer, you have to ensure that you stay well positioned on the search engines, so that you get more organic traffic.

If you are lucky enough to get your site on the front page of the search engines, you will need to ensure that it stays there, and in order to do this you will constantly need to monitor your search engine rankings.

If you are actively doing SEO, you should see the constant gradual climb of your website to the first page. If your site just seems to stay in the same place on the search engines, you will need to implement another plan of action.

There will of course be short term fluctuations in your sites placing, but you need to analyze the long term search engine trends. Because the search engines are always changing their rules, you will have to keep up with the trends or your sites could lose their ranking.

Make a chart for yourself with all your sites and their rankings listed. At least once a month you should check these rankings, and be sure to watch your competition closely. Each search engine uses it's own formula's and sets of rules, and if they change something, your sites rankings could change accordingly. If your competition rises too far above you, try to analyze why. You may need to put some more marketing in to get your site onto the same level, or maybe it just needs a healthy dose of unique content. Be flexible and adjust your marketing strategies accordingly.

There are about ten highly popular search engines. You need to pick only the top few to monitor, or you could go mad trying to keep up with all of them. To check out the latest favorites, visit searchenginewatch.com.

If your site has a major drop in all of the search engines, this should ring the warning bells in your head. Check the following:

1. If you have recently changed a code or script on the site, this could have confused the spiders.

2. If your website happens to be down when the spiders come around, your site could then disappear from the rankings all together.

3. That search engine could have changed its formula and is looking for new criteria.

4. A page or two on your site is not keyword rich enough.

The keywords you use are very important in SEO, as they are used as a foundation to how your site will be ranked. Without good keyword choices, your website will become invisible to the search engines. If your keywords are too competitive, you could have the same problem. Your SEO strategy will cost you in time and money on a continual basis. Keep your focus on the big picture, and in the long term you will reap the rewards.
