Keeping Your Car Safe
There is nothing more frustrating than returning to your car to find it has been vandalised
, broken into, or even worse, stolen altogether. Not only is it frustrating, but also inconvenient and invasive its never a nice feeling to know someone has been through your personal belongings without your permission. Besides having comprehensive car insurance, there are some simple tips you can use to minimise the impact of having your car being broken into or stolen.
Parking
Your car is constantly at risk, but where you park your car can dramatically lower the chance of break-in or theft. If you park your car at the train or bus station, try to get there earlier so that the car is not left at the back of the car park. This will reduce the opportunities for a vandal or thief to make a move without being caught. This tip can also be applied in shopping centre car parks and other public spaces. The more activity that is happening around your car, the less likely it is that someone will take a chance to damage your vehicle.
Remove Temptation
Its not just the car itself that is a target to robbers its also the contents inside. Navigation systems, mobile phones, handbags, sunglasses, DVDs, CDs, iPods and even clothing are often popular items that are reported stolen from vehicles. To avoid smashed windows and missing personal items, remove them from sight. Placing them in the car boot or taking them out of the car altogether will stop opportunistic thieves.
Physical Deterrents Work
Like security doors for houses, visible steering wheel locks and alarms also offer a valuable visual deterrent that can often discourage thieves. Another simple, yet effective measure is making sure any alarm stickers are visible to all. The thought of setting off an alarm and drawing attention to the vehicle is often enough to stop robbers from breaking into your car.
Lock Up
Always be sure to lock all of your vehicles doors and keep windows wound shut. It may sound simple, but with keyless entry and remote devices now used in most cars, many people walk away, press a button and assume their car is secure. This is not always the case. Dont walk away from your car until you have checked that it is completely locked and the windows are secured. Many of us often leave the car open or even running if ducking into a shop for 5 minutes. This is more than enough time for someone to let themselves in, take what they want and leave undetected. Even if youre only going to be a couple of minutes, never leave your car unlocked.
By following these simple tips, youll limit the opportunity to be a target of a car theft or robbery.
