Keeping Your Computer Safe Is Safefighter A Good Option?
Rogue antivirus programs are designed to mimic legitimate security programs and seek to convince computer users of their legitimacy
. From their choice of names, like SafeFigther and CyberSecurity, to their logos and slogans, they seek to imitate well-known and reputable programs. How can you tell the difference?
What is SafeFighter?
SafeFighter is no different than the host of other rogue antivirus program. Its goal is only to persuade you to buy software that ultimately doesnt protect your computer against any sort of threat. This program, like all others, uses pop-ups and simulated scans in order to convince computer users that they have several severe security problems that need to be resolved immediately. When people receive messages indicating that their personal information could be at risk or there are worms and Trojans in their system, their first impulse is to do something. That is exactly what SafeFighter wants; it wants the computer owner to act quickly without scrutinizing the scan results or warning messages.
SafeFigther is a rogue program in the WinSoft family and is nearly identical to Trust Cop, TrustFighter, Secure Warrior, Secure Fighter, and many others. It is also seen as Safe Fighter.
Most of these programs are ultimately alike. They want you to download and install the full version of the program. In hopes of achieving that goal, they can use some pretty convincing methods. However, once you know a bit more about what to expect from programs like this, you can take a careful look at any advertisements or pop ups you see on your computer to help keep your home machine safe and prevent problems like these from ever occurring.
How Do I Know If SafeFighter Is In My System?
Rogue antivirus programs typically act very much the same. There are slight differences, but they use the same tools to achieve their goal. Pop-ups are a favorite way to convince users of security threats and persuade them to purchase useless software. This is the first sign that will reliably indicate the presence of a rogue antivirus program.
SafeFighter generates warnings that closely resemble those issued by the legitimate Windows Security Center. Because they look nearly identical, many users assume it comes from a trust source. But before you click on anything, and certainly before you decide to purchase anything, take a minute to read the warning. If it is a real Security Center message, it will notify you that your system is not fully protected. If this is the case, then you can find a reputable security program to resolve the issue.
If, however, it comes from SafeFighter, the message will include an exhortation to purchase software. This is how you can tell the difference: Security Center will not do that.
You will also see scan results pop up when you boot up your computer or go online. Again, these are designed to mimic those of reputable programs, so take the time to read it carefully. SafeFighter is written in the top right corner. Help Protect Your PC, it tells you. Below, it tells you that it has run a scan of your system and has detected several infected files. This number is usually very high, which can be another good indication that it is false. Close any of these ads with your task manager.
Besides the pop-ups, your computer is likely to start performing more sluggishly. It may take longer to boot up, it may take longer to open programs. SafeFighter is using your CPU to run itself constantly. If your CPU usage is much too high, this is a good sign that you have a rogue program installed.
In addition, SafeFighter can hijack your homepage and change your browser settings. You will be continually redirected to rogue websites featuring SafeFighter. You will be urged to purchase the full version of the software to resolve your many security risks (remember, though, that SafeFighter is likely your only security risk at present). This, as well as new desktop shortcuts or system tray icons, can signal the presence of a rogue.
Did I Install SafeFighter?
If you dont recall installing SafeFighter, you probably didnt. Rogue antivirus programs can enter your system through other means. Most often, it is on the back of a Trojan. These are vehicles that carry malware into your system. You can pick these up any number of places, but they are typically associated with adult sites. Ads and content on these sites may have Trojans hidden with them. Clicking on an ad or downloading a video can invite the Trojan in.
Sometimes simply visiting the site is enough to allow the Trojan to enter. Other sites to be cautious of are: gaming sites, sites with warez or pirated content, gambling sites, and social networking sites. It is also very common for Trojans to be bundled with free videos. When you download a video, a Trojan like Zlob will pretend to be a video codec. You need a codec to download the video and play it, and this is how Zlob comes in. Once in your system, it deposits SafeFighter and other forms of malware.
But because it is possible to download a program like this believing it to be legitimate, it is important to take precautions. First, do not trust scan results unless you have started a scan. Learn to recognize your security programs and any logos or slogans they have. If you spot one that is not familiar, go online and try to identify it. Chances are that it is a rogue. Be careful to read any message or warning and note the name. If it is not issued by your security program, close it using the task manager. Most importantly, if you do think that there is a rogue antivirus program like SafeFighter installed in your system, take steps to remove it. This will ensure that your computer will function optimally, and you wont be slowed down by pop-ups.
