Keeping Your Feet On The Ground - The Challenge Of Foot Problems
Some people believe that by looking at people's hands they can learn a lot about them
, but it is actually feet that give true insight. Just looking at shoes alone, such as work boots, cowboy boots or fashionable high heels, can evoke a strong feeling about an individual who is a complete stranger.
But underneath the camouflage of a shoe, you can learn even more about a person's health, hygiene, personality and even activity level just by identifying common problems with a man or woman's feet.
Foot problems of some sort plague a majority of people at some point in their lives. From major to minor in nature, a glance at common ailments such as bunions, corns, calluses, cracked heels or yellow toenails speaks volumes about an individual.
No matter what foot ailment people have, when symptoms become painful or troublesome, mobility is greatly impacted. A man who is walking a long distance in a shoe without socks or arch support, a woman standing on her feet all day in high heels or a child developing a blister while playing in new tennis shoes all have one thing in common - pain.
Because we rely solely on our feet to get from here to there, when each step involves burning or painful sensations, there is no choice left but to stop moving, which creates an extreme inconvenience in daily life.
Though some foot problems are caused by a medical condition, such as diabetes, decreased circulation or a physiological reason, many problems with feet are easily treatable while some could have been prevented in the first place.
Most people recognize the wear and tear that takes place on automobile tires, and feet are no different. No one would expect their car to go far with worn out tires - so keeping feet healthy and strong is a must. Unlike the tire analogy, however, people cannot replace their feet if they wear them out!
Fortunately, treatments are available to assist when the damage is already done, but steps can be taken today to prevent future foot problems. The first step should always be to keep feet clean, dry and moisturized to prevent fungus, warts or skin breakdown and discomfort. Pampering and taking care of the feet each day will reduce the likelihood of some common foot problems ever developing.
The next step involves giving each foot the unique support it needs. A lot of damage to feet can be traced back to lacking appropriate foot support and/or inappropriate shoes. For example, bunions are a painful cost for being in fashion and calluses or cracked heels come at a high price for going barefoot.
Feet need healthy support to withstand the impact and stress they receive each day. Therefore, feet need to be cradled in comfortable walking shoes and socks, with supports for arches, heels or the ball of the foot. For those who are active at work or athletic, corners cannot be cut when purchasing appropriate shoes to handle the additional stress.
Most importantly, no matter what foot ailment an individual has, it will not go away on its own. In fact, over time it will become more debilitating if treatment isn't implemented.
Whether the cure lies in seeing a specialist, improving hygiene, using over-the-counter treatments or purchasing better shoes and supports, today is the day to begin reversing the damage already done. Foot problems need to be corrected if you plan on getting more "highway miles" from them.
