In recent years, car GPS systems have become a common sight on the roads

. Most people will have bought a sat nav when their popularity was at its peak a couple of years ago. However, with 15% of the UK's road network being updated annually, you may want to consider updating your sat nav after owning it for 12 months or more.

After all there is nothing worse than being somewhere you don't know well and the satellite navigation map being out of date!

When you buy your car GPS system for the first time, it will have been supplied with mapping data already installed. This will not run out or expire, and will be sufficient to help you find your way. You can use these maps for as long as you like - but if you want your satellite system to be bang up to date with all the latest road developments, then it's worth investing in some new mapping software.

GPS software suppliers usually update their data every quarter. If you would like to update your maps, first think about the area you are interested in. It may be more cost-effective to only buy new maps for areas you travel in frequently - such as the region where you live or work.

Updates can be bought online from retailers, manufacturers like Tom Tom or Garmin and software suppliers. Quality retailers should be able to advise you on what updates to buy, and from where.

Portable sat navs can simply be plugged in to your PC in order to update them - for sat navs that are fixed to your car's dashboard, it may be worth asking a retailer how best to upload the software onto it.

A good satellite navigation system is an investment. Keeping your GPS system up to date in this way should ensure it lasts you for years, no matter how the roads change around you.
