If we're lucky, we've had enough forethought to store our holiday decorations in color coded boxes to make them easy to locate during the festive seasons. We all are more comfortable in a clean space and we know that it's a healthier way to live as well. Keeping your storage unit organized should be no different. You've probably rented it to declutter your home or garage, so why not strive to keep it tidy as well.

It all starts with a bit of preparation. You'll need to take a trip to your local office supply store and purchase organizational supplies to get you started before you place your items into your storage unit. Buy thick colored markers to label each box on all four sides with numbers or contents. Purchase packing tape to seal them and make a list of the contents to keep track of your stored items at home. If you're using a numbered system, the box numbers should correspond with this master list. If you have kept original boxes from appliances, use these boxes whenever possible and cushion with paper or bubble wrap. An even better organizational product you can utilize is clear plastic storage boxes. If you can manage to both number these and see through the sides, you'll never have a problem finding anything again in your storage unit.

Being disorganized is a problem for a lot of people. Once the mess begins, it's difficult to gain control. That's why being prepared and employing a few simple organizational techniques will help keep your storage unit clutter free. If you start early, this extra storage space might even end up being the most organized space you have. And if by chance you find that don't even know what you have in your storage unit, you might also benefit from a good purging. Sell some items or even give them to your favorite charity.
