Keeping Your Vehicle Safe From Theft

Car theft is a major problem in the United States

. No one is completely safe from having this happen and, even if you have the best insurance policy in the world, losing your car or any of its contents can be emotionally devastating. Plus, it can cause a huge hassle and inconvenience for you if, like most people, you rely on your vehicle on a daily basis. The good news is that, with a healthy dose of common sense and a few protective measures, you can amp up your car's safety and reduce the likelihood of having it stolen or vandalized.

If at all possible, you'll want to avoid keeping valuables in your vehicle. In fact, it's not just valuables you have to worry about but anything that could potentially be appealing to a car thief. So, take your laptop, your Ipod, your cell phone, your shopping bags, your purse or backpack, or even that old folder full of CDs with you when you leave your car. Or, better yet, just don't bring those goods along for the ride at all! If you absolutely can't help leaving something of value in your car, make sure you lock it securely and that you keep the items out of plain sight where they could serve as an open invitation to a thief.

You should also avoid making your car look extra flashy. Sure, everyone wants to have a nice, fancy car that they can show off to their friends, but if you go overboard, you could turn your car into an easy (and profitable) target. It might just be in your best interest to keep from buying those fancy rims or installing that easily-visible high-tech stereo system. And, if you're going to have high quality items in your car, then you need a high quality alarm system to go along with them!

You'll also want to be mindful of where you park, particularly if you are going to be leaving your car unattended for long periods of time or overnight. Try to park in busy areas, areas where pedestrians or other drivers are constantly going by. You should take care to avoid parking in the "bad parts" of town, and don't assume that parking decks are a safe bet either! If you do park in a parking deck, avoid parking in secluded areas away from other vehicles.

If someone has tampered with your vehicle, you'll know about it!
