Keeping the Faith

Although faith is often used in a religious context

, there is no reason this must be so and indeed we talk about faith all the time as if it were a natural thing. And indeed it is, for this is an uncertain world, and faith gives us the courage to move ahead in our endeavors optimistic about their outcomes. We have faith in our spouses and friends. We even have (some anyway) faith in the weatherman. When we encourage someone by saying, "It'll work out, you'll see" (and it usually does), what we're really doing is telling our friend to have faith.

Without faith, this world would be total chaos (at least for us humans--animals have unshakable faith). We could not survive individually or collectively without faith. I think we can all agree with that if we really think it through. So what do we do, as individuals, to keep our faith?

It would be great if we had unshakable faith but sadly we don't. In fact, as we all know as humans, it is quite difficult to keep our faith at all times. And we all know what happens when we lose faith--all sorts of anxieties creep in, depression deprives us of optimism and our inner glow, suspicions and hostility may erupt. If it continues, the loss of faith could result in a nervous breakdown or chronic depression.

So how does someone keep his faith when he feels it slipping away? Firstly, it is very difficult, and we all know that to be true. But fortunately at any one time most of the people around us do have faith, whether they believe it or not. And talking to people about their faith is one of the best ways to fortify yours. And the fact that every individual sees faith slightly differently, only makes your confidence that much stronger. Don't be afraid to ask people directly about this using the word faith. Nearly everyone will agree that they indeed do possess faith in something or in one another if they think about it. We wouldn't know up from down without it. So talk to people about their faith and fortify yours!
