Kefalonia Is A Wonderful Greek Island Vacation Destination.

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in Greece

, and it is quite possibly the most beautiful too. People who visit the island for a vacation are stunned by its natural beauty and its vastly varying landscapes, a mixture of stunning beaches and turquoise blue seas surrounded by pine trees and olive groves with a stark contrast of rugged mountain ranges and valleys with vineyards produce quality local wines.

Each summer tourists flock to Kefalonia to take advantage of its stunning beauty and tourists are wild by the abundance of character villages on offer around the island. While much of the very old historic buildings in Kefalonia were destroyed by the bombers of the Second World War and a earthquake there are still some gorgeous tourist spots for people to enjoy.

Most of the villages have beaches close by with Lassi, Assos and Scala some of the most popular. While these villages are developed for tourism they still hold some of the original traditional features you would expect from a Greek community.

Kefalonia has become famous in recent years for the filming of Capt Corelli's mandolin a Hollywood film starring Nicolas Cage-this film showed the true beauty of the island on the silver screen and has won its many fans.

In the north of the island there is the beach of Myrtos, this is well known as one of the world's most beautiful beach locations and is a popular tourist hotspot. It has golden sand the most gorgeous blue sea and the cliff edge surrounding it making it a wonder to behold, even though it is in a fairly quiet spot and is well worth taking a trip you are in a hire car or on the bus at these for a day.

While there are quality tourist resorts in Kefalonia and tourism is well catered for with all mod cons you would expect when you go on holiday in Europe if you venture outside the main tourist areas you can experience a completely different holiday.

Quiet walks and quaint coves surround the island so if you're looking for a relaxing holiday with plenty of privacy just take a short walk outside your resorts and you'll find everything you desire, peace and quiet and tranquillity.

The food in Kefalonia is notorious as the Greeks love to put on a good spread, traditional dishes such as Greek salads, Moussaka and fresh seafood specialities are very popular on the island and as many of the restaurants and tavernas available are family-owned you can expect home-cooked food of the highest standard wherever you choose to eat.
