Ken Betterton Says - Know Your Enemy - Fear

Ask how to motivate yourself.

Ask how to motivate yourself.

The #1 thing participants in Ken Bettertons workshops ask for is a tool to help motivate others. They want something for employees who have been at the job for a few years and need a gentle kick in the pants to get the gears turning again.

Its called the seven-year-itch, and a lot of employees catch it. Now you might think that the number one way to reinvigorate your employees would be a nice fat raise. Or maybe a paid two-week vacation. Or perhaps youre considering some type of public recognition for all their hard work to rekindle their fire.

Ken will tell you right now that none of these approaches works.

The best way to motivate your employees is to take a good hard look in the mirror.

Thats right. The best motivator is an inspired leader. Its really what we all want, isnt it? From our President to the local Girl Scout leader, we all look for someone who has passion, drive, and vision for the road ahead. An inspired leader lights the fire in our bellies and creates determination to get the job done.

So why keep searching for your employees to bring it? Its YOUR job to get them motivated and inspired and passionate about what they do.

To get your employees inspired, you need to understand what you want from them. Is it a sales quota? A certain level of customer service? A deep knowledge of the accounting side of the business? If you have a clear vision of what you want out of your employees, it will be easier to attain than if you just have an amorphous idea of better performance.

You must understand the needs of your employees, too. What will they require to meet your expectations? How can you help them meet your goals? Its all well and good to tell someone what you expect of them, but giving them the tools theyll need to get the job done is crucial to success.

Set clear goals for your employees. Everyone likes to know where the ship is headed, so provide a clear map of where you want to go and how you intend to get there. Give your crew help along each step of the way. Mentor them one-on-one if possible. Give weekly coaching sessions to the entire group. Let them know theyre doing a great job and show them where theres room for improvement.

You always find what youre looking for, so always look for the best in your employees. And in yourself.
