Peiryar Wildlife Sanctuary

Located around the Peiryar Lake in Idukki district of Kerala, Peiryar Wildlife

sanctuary was once hunting ground of the Maharajas of Travancore. It is now declared as a national park. While touring this park one can explore the herds of elephants, tigers, leopards, monkeys, nilgai, sloth bear, porcupine, the Malabar Flying Squirrel and lots of birds including the Great Indian Hornbill.

One can tour this park in between December and April.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is home to elephants, deer, gaur, tiger, wild boar and various birds including jungle fowl, wood peckers and king fishers.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Bird lovers can pack up to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary which is located Munnar. It is also known as Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and home to more than 200 varieties of bird. This sanctuary houses birds like Malabar Trogon, Common Grey Hornbill and Malabar Hornbill.

The other well-known and worth visiting sanctuaries are Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary, Parambikulam Wildlife sanctuary, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Muthanga Wildlife sanctuary, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Silent Valley National Park and Eravikulam National Park.

Flora and Fauna in Kerala Sanctuaries

Kerala wildlife sanctuaries are home to wide variety of animals, reptiles and floras. The main animals are Elephants, gaur, sambar, deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tigers, wild boars, sloth bears, leopards, lion tailed macaques, Nilgiri Tahrs, grizzled giant squirrels, Hanuman langurs, peacocks, star tortoises, wild dogs, civet cats, the Atlas moth, bonnet, macaques, Loris, mongoose, bears, barking deer, pangolins, bison, etc.

The main floras are teak, maruthu, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal, chadachi, mazhukanjiram, bamboo, neem, nanjanathi, sandal, dendrocalamus, marythu, vaka, mulluvenka, elavu, manjakadambu pala, vembu, aval, 171 grass species, 143 species of orchids, etc.
