Key Dubai Buildings
Dubai architecture is extremely dynamic
Dubai architecture is extremely dynamic. Dubai hotels, Dubai shopping centres, Dubai urban residential developments, and other public buildings in Dubai push design boundaries and themes. If you wish to familiarise yourself with iconic Dubai architecture, here are some of the key Dubai buildings and projects.
The first and the most important example of revolutionary Dubai architecture is Dubai Palm Island. A breathtaking architectural achievement by RMJM architects, it is recognised as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Dubai Palm Island is an artificial island made with approximately 94 million cubic meters of sand and roughly 7 million tons of rocks and stones.
Dubai Palm Islandcomprises three islands- Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira, which house Luxury spas, themed boutique hotels, shoreline apartment buildings, lavish holiday accommodations, beaches, restaurants, cafes, dive sites, theatres and several other exciting tourist attractions.
Another prominent example of Dubai architecture is Burj al Arab. Designed by Atkins, this building resembling a giant sail has become a symbol of Dubai, like Statue of Liberty in New York. Burj Al Arab is built on sand, unlike most tall buildings which are founded on rock. Further, the Burj al Arab is supported on 250 1.5M diameter columns that go 45 meters under the sea.
The Lighthouse Tower by Atkins in Dubai is another important building in Dubai. Its uniqueness does not lie in its 400 m tall height, but in meeting sustainability targets. The low-carbon high rise commercial tower illustrates that high-rise buildings also have the significant potential to be designed and constructed to meet sustainability targets. The 64-storey building incorporates ingenious mechanical and electrical systems to reduce energy needs of the building. It uses active chilled beams and photo-voltaic panels to reduce total energy consumption by up to 40%.
Other important buildings and projects in Dubai architecture include 21st Century Tower, Millennium Tower, Beach Front Hotel, Burj Dubai, Dubai International convention centre, Dubai Signature Towers, and Burj Khalifa Tower.
