Key Facts On Diabetes
The NHS have stated that 5.05% of the population of England has diabetes as of 2010
. This is due to both the increase of obesity and the ageing population. There are several consequences of discovering you or someone close to you has diabetes, to get a clearer understanding of some of the key facts - read on.
Diabetes Type 1 - There are two forms of diabetes, Type 1 is described as an autoimmune disease. This is where the beta-cells within your pancreas are destroyed by your body and the production of insulin is restricted in turn. Preventing this form of diabetes is not possible and it can be diagnosed in patients who are fit or unfit, fat or thin. Patients of type 1 diabetes must inject insulin into their body to maintain control over the condition. For any type 1 diabetes patient, life expectancy is reduced by approx 15 years.
Diabetes Type 2 - Type 2 diabetes, otherwise know as insulin resistance, is when a patients insulin does not work properly or their body does not produce enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is often linked with a patients lifestyle, bodyweight or fitness and is more likely to be diagnosed later in life. Type 2 diabetes is the type of diabetes diagnosed for 85% of diabetes patients. Life expectancy of a type 2 patient is reduced by up to 7 years for females and 5 years for males.
Symptoms - The symptoms experienced by both diabetes type 1 and 2 patients, can be; general itching or recurring thrush, loss of weight, an increased thirst, fatigue and the need to urinate frequently (particularly at night). Other symptoms that are less common but often linked specifically with type 1 diabetes include; constipation, cramps, recurrent skin infections and blurred vision.
Sometimes these symptoms can go unnoticed for many years, particularly with type 2. It can be only when a complication arises such as foot ulceration or blurred vision, that a diagnosis is made. Anyone who has experienced any of these symptoms should seek a medical test to be sure that it is not diabetes.
