Keypad Door Locks

A far cry from the traditional lock, keypad door locks are a more modern way to secure doors

. Instead of using an ordinary key to open or lock the door you simply key in a secret pin number on the electronic keypad. Sometimes, such keypad door locks will include biometric features such as a fingerprint or eye reader or a slot for swiping an electronic authentication card. This keyless system has many advantages that make it a better choice than a key based locking system.

First, you eliminate the possibility of locking yourself out of your house or office because of a lost key. And it not just the inconvenience of being shut out or in but also the drastic and costly measures you have to go through. For instance, if a spare key cannot be found or it will take some time before the key arrives on site, then the lock would have to be broken and replaced. Note that breaking the lock may inadvertently damage the door itself thus increasing repair costs. With keypad door locks, you do not have to worry about this happening since there are of course no keys to be lost. In case there is suspicion that the unlock code is compromised, changing the locks is not necessary as one need only change the pin code.

For working parents who may not be at home by the time their children get back from school, a keypad door lock would be ideal. There would be no need for hiding copies of the door keys under mats or pots so the kids can retrieve them and open the door. Having copies of the keys hidden around the compound is a security risk as an intruder only needs to watch your movements a number of times to know where the key is normally hidden.

You can avoid such risk through an electronic door lock as you need only advise all family members of the door combination or you can program the lock to accept biometric identification for each person in the family. Parents can rest easy that anyone that does not have the unlock code or whose biometric finger details are not on the system cannot get inside the house and the children are thus relatively safe until the parent return.

Ordinary door locks are easily picked and compromised. The risk of someone copying your key is ever present when you are using a regular lock. An intruder may even get access to the key from a previous occupant of your house. Keypad activated door locks are not easily tampered with. If the door is close to window that a burglar can break and reach to open the door from the inside, you can install a double-sided keypad lock that requires a code to open the door whether from the outside or the inside. For even tighter security, you can have different pin codes for both sides of the door (that is the inside lock and the outside lock).
