Keywords? How can I find them?

When you are launching a new website or working to improve a current one

, you will have to contend with keywords. Keywords are both very simple and very difficult at the same time. Keywords are the words or terms that would be used to search for something. The trick is to find the correct keywords for the products or services that you are offering. One generalrule of thumb is that these should be common terms and not be specific product names or company terminology unless you are providing a very well known product or service. If you have not identified the correct search term, how will search engines and your customers find you? Keywords are critical to proper search engine optimization.

Keyword research and analysis can be very involved and difficult or very simple. Every situation is different. The important thing is that this is done methodically and comprehensively. So, how do you identify and analyze the keywords that will drive traffic to your site? My first and foremost resource is common sense. Try to look at your products and services from your customer's point of view. What types of words would they use to search for these products? If this is something new, what would they search for if they were looking for a better known competing product? The second place you should look it to your target customers. If possible, visit and interview as many customers as possible. Ask them, in general terms, to search for something similar to what you are proposing to sell online. Try not to be too specific. You do not want to influence their searches too much. The goal is to identify what words they would use intuitively if they needed something similar to what you are providing online. Try to select a varied cross section of potential customers. Finally, research the keywords that your competitors are fighting for. Do any of these apply to you? If so, add them to your list. There are some online resources that can help to identify possible keywords, such as the Google AdWords tool. This is just one of many.

This should give you a fairly diverse list of potential keywords. Now what? Should you throw them all into your website? The answer is no. There is more work to be done before any keywords are placed anywhere near your website. Keyword identification is only part of the process. The other two pieces to this puzzle are competition ratios and search volumes. Selecting keywords that do not have sufficient search volumes to meet your business needs will not provide you with the success that you are looking for. At the same time, selecting keywords that have a high number of other sites competing for them may not provide you with the results that you are after. It is a delicate balance. The key is to have a clear understanding of your search traffic needs and the resources available to you to compete for these keywords. Use all of this information to narrow down your list of keywords. Now it is up to you to use them wisely.
