Kidney infection A common disease with uncommon symptoms
Kidney infection is frequently becoming common in UK people. Every year millions of people are diagnosed by this infection. However, health awareness can be seen in UK people as they are now more conscious of this disease. The infection in kidney belongs to the family of infections of the urinary system known as urinary tract infections (UTIs). Commonly, the infection of the bladder, urethra and prostate are called lower urinary tract infection. It becomes upper urinary tract infection when the infection starts to involve the kidneys and its function. The other name of infection of the kidney is pyelonephritis.
As aforesaid urinary tract infections are very common, hence it is not a surprise that 40% of women and 10% of men may get affected in their lifetime. With the data it has been found that they are mostly common in women younger than 50 years of age. On the other hand they are rare in men of the same age group but are more problematic. Kidney infection is also frequent in children. However, diagnosing them becomes difficult as the symptoms are not easily identified. Taking children in consideration, this infection has been observed more frequently in girls less than four years of age and boys less than one year of age. The causes of this infection are many few of them are listed below, though cause is yet to find.
Bacteria invading the urine can be a cause, which is normally a sterile body fluid.
Common sources of bacteria invading the urinary system are the vagina, anus and skin.
Shorter length of urethra in women is another cause which makes it more common in women compared to men.
Sexual intercourse also increases the risk of urine infection in women.
Pregnant women may also be at higher risk for developing kidney infections.
These are the few causes of kidney infection that are commonly found in patients. The illness is identified with some common symptoms such as, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, generalised weakness, fatigue, a burning sensation with urination, dehydration etc. According to traditional mode of treatment antibiotic is prescribed to kill germs. A prolong period of antibiotic dose is considered to be an effective way of treating kidney infection. Another way of treating them is herbal medicine. Since these do not contain any side effect they are safe and easy to use. Identifying symptoms can be an easy way of treating this disease because early it is diagnose the early it can be treated.
