Kids in Tottenham try out sport on roller skates

A number of youngsters in the Tottenham area have been trying out a sport which involves them using roller skates.

The Enforcers Skater Hockey Club has been holding free weekly 'come and try' sessions of an indoor version of ice hockey that involves nothing frozen.

Those who enjoy it and are successful at the activity then have the chance to play for their local club, meaning they may want to purchase kids' skates for themselves.

Intended for 11 to 17-year-olds, the sessions are taking place at Northumberland Park Community School each Thursday evening.

The aim of those organising the events is to attract more youngsters to the sport so a youth and junior team can be formed ahead of the 2011 season.

They have been made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery via Sports England.

And this is not the only such cause that has benefited from such money, as the Lottery claims to have helped more than 340,000 projects so far.

As well as cash through Sport England, additional funding was supplied by the L&Q Housing Association.

Thanks to the financial help, the Enforcers Skater Hockey Club has been able to buy roller skates and protective equipment for shared use.

Treasurer at the organisation Wayne Plummer said: "[It] is a well established club but we're always looking to attract more young members.

"Our project is about opening up our club and giving young people in Tottenham and surrounding areas the opportunity to play skater hockey competitively."

He went on to note: "We're delighted to have received Lottery funding to make it all happen."

Those keen to try out kids' skates can do so on Thursdays between 18:30 and 20:00 BST.

Meanwhile, the club's senior team meet on Tuesday nights between 20:00 and 21:30 BST and both sessions take place at Northumberland Park Community School.
