Kindle 3 Vs Nook- Is there Now a Clear Winner?

Amazon has released it's 3rd generation Kindle

, or Kindle 3, to a very receptive market. People were, and still are, lining up on wait lists to get their own device. The battle for the best quality ebook reader on the market is still between the Nook vs Kindle 3, but is there a clear winner now? Let's take a look.

The Kindle has a few improvements that are not to be overlooked as trivial.

Memory- The Nook has continually out classed the Kindle in this department, because the Nook comes with 1,500 books standard and expandable memory option with SD card. The Kindle 3 has now more than doubled it's size to 3,500 books as the standard memory capacity.

Lighter/Smaller- The Kindle 3 is now just over 3 ounces lighter than the Nook, depending on which model you get, the Wi Fi only or the 3G+ Wi Fi. It is noticably smaller when placed next to the Nook, but the display screen is still the 6" standard display.

Quiter Page Turn Buttons- This seems trivial to the customer who hasn't had an ebook reader, but this is kind of a big deal. The "click......click.....click" of page turning can get annoying to your spouse trying to sleep next to you in bed.

Improved Contrast- There is actually a noticeable difference in contrast quality from the 2nd to 3rd generation of the Kindle. The text is darker and the background is lighter.

What are the big differences between the Nook and Kindle 3?

Comparing the Nook and Kindle 3, one can see there are still some very big differences. For one, the Nook still has a color navigation screen, whereas Amazon has opted to stick to the push-button-no-color technology for the Kindle 3.

There is a lending feature on the Nook that allows you to lend your books to friends and family for up to two weeks. No such feature is available yet on the Kindle 3.

International 3G coverage is available on the Kindle 3 (100+ countries) and not for the Nook.

Some other stand-out differences with the Kindle are the lighter and smaller design and faster page turning capabilities. With the standard memory raised to 3,500 books, it makes it a tough decision to not choose the Kindle 3 vs Nook, unless color navigation is a priority for you.
