Kinds Of Longboards Available

Longboards, like surfboards and skateboards, have plenty of different kinds and designs

. These things look like longer versions of skateboards or surfboards with wheels. Its design make this sport's riders seem to surf and glide in concrete. Using it is like skateboarding and surfboarding combined, wherein the foot is used to move and the hand to turn. The type of board is mostly defined by its purpose. It is used in competitive slaloms, downhill riding, transportation and cruising and for tricks. Difference in design can be from a part or the complete overhaul of the classic longboard design.

Longboards measure at 90cm to 150cm. The equipment have a few components: the deck, truck, wheels and bearings. The part where the rider places the feet is called the deck. The nose or front, body or middle part and the tail or back part are parts of the deck. The part which holds together the wheel and the deck and responsible for turning is called the truck. Movement at high speed with regard to gravity and the force to propel the board is done by the bearing. It is attached to the truck hanger while the wheels is attached to it; it is made from either steel or ceramic. The various types of wheels allow better movement and braking depending on the surface.

A relaxed application of the longboard is for transportation and cruising. Gear for transportation typically measure 100-130cm long. Boards used in cruising measure 150cm to 200cm long. These longboards resemble the surfboard and do not have short noses. The flexibility and large surface area makes riding these boards comfortable. Because of the wide surface, riders can place both feet adjacent to each other either at the nose or the body. A loosely set truck is utilized making for narrower turns and allowing a rocking movement (by shifting the rider's weight on the board) to propel the board forward.

Boards for slalom racing is fast becoming popular. Slalom racing boards measure 63cm - 89cm and are known as the smallest longboard variety. It is made with carbon fiber and can handle the strains of speed and sudden shifts of weight. Slalom racers normally use more than one board when competing in various types of slaloms. Shorter boards are utilized in smaller or tighter courses. Longer longboards are used in steep or giant slaloms.

Downhill riding is the most popular application of the longboard. Riders go to roads found in high places like hills or mountains. Riders do not push the board but rather rely on gravity instead. Tighter trucks are utilized in downhill riding to prevent too much swaying or movement. The wheelbase is maximized by placing the trucks at both ends of the board. Riders are suggested to use safety equipment because of the dangers of downhill riding. Trick gear resemble downhill riding longboards. The only difference being in length and the type of wheel used.
