The kitchen is the most practical room in our house, and somewhere that we prepare food most days. For this reason, the work surfaces have to be kept really clean to keep us safe and healthy.

Wipe down work surfaces daily before and after every use, to ensure that the surface is unscrupulously clean. Warm water and washing up liquid is fine, but if you are particularly worried then use an antibacterial spray. You can get these on pre soaked wipes in the supermarket.

If you have ceramic tiles in your kitchen, keep the grouting clean with a mixture of one part bleach and three parts water, and use an old toothbrush to scrub between the tiles. An all purpose kitchen cleaner will tackle stains.

If you have laminate surfaces, use a cream cleaner or a bicarbonate paste.

Solid wood surfaces are a nightmare in the home, especially if they haven't been treated with a stain. Regular oiling is required to keep the water form soaking up water, but wipe over with an antibacterial spray, and be careful not to put anything hot or stain the surfaces.

Stainless steel work tops are easily cleaned with microfiber cloths, or a little baby oil on a cloth to stop smears.

Granite work surfaces are hardwearing and resistant to stains, so can just be wiped down when used.
