Kitchen countertops granite vs Quartz countertops
Kitchen countertops granite vs Quartz countertops
Another question I'm asked quite often is the comparison between Quartz man made surfaces vs granite counter tops. Each surface is a fine surface in its own right. What you have to do is separate truth from fiction. There have been inaccuracies tossed about by the Quartz manufacturers that are clearly false.
One is that granite is a health hazard, which is absolutely not true and has been disproven time and time again. Another is that granite harbours bacteria. Again, this is another false statement perpetuated by the Quarts industry. In my opinion, these tactics have hurt the Quartz industry much more than it has helped them sell any product they may offer.
Quartz surfaces are fine products. If you are looking for a very hard surface with no variations and predictably safe patterns Quartz surfaces should get a long look and they have many colors to choose from. I feel Quartz surfaces are a perfect fit for contemporary settings. Granite on the other hand fits better in a more traditional type setting. Regardless, you really cant go wrong with either choice. Since we offer both surfaces, I am going to list the pros and cons of both materials without the hype and let you decide what is best for you.
OK, both surfaces are extremely hard compared to a surface like Corian, or Formica, or even marble. However, granite is much harder to scratch than Quartz. Quartz on its own is very, very hard. But, something has to hold all that Quartz together and its called epoxy. So what happens is when you end up scratching the epoxy, you can't repair the scratch because if you use a diamond embedded polishing pad which you would usually use on Quartz, you will end up with swirl marks on the surface. So you are better off leaving the scratch in place. With granite you can polish the scratch right out. Both surfaces are very hard to stain. Technically speaking Quartz doesn't need to be sealed and granite does, but we have installed close to one thousand granite counter tops I can recall maybe one time where we needed to get a stain out and we were successful. Just keep your granite sealed and you will not have any staining issues. They both will last a lifetime, so longevity should be equally matched. However, Quartz over time will tend to fade a little bit especially if you leave it in direct sunlight......Once again, there really isn't a right or wrong answer when choosing between Quartz or granite. Its what fits your lifestyle.
