The capital of Thailand is Bangkok or as its known in Thai-Krung Thep Maha Nakhon which means city of angels. The full ceremonial name in Thai is actually much longer but can only be pronounced by a native Thai speaker so to the rest of the world it is known as Bangkok. Together with its attractions and sightseeing venues Bangkok is also known for its festivals that occur throughout the year. One such popular festival is the Kite Flying Festival.
This festival occurs between February and April when winds move in through the Gulf of Thailand. This activity is an age old tradition in Thailand that is said to have its roots in China. This tradition has lasted over centuries so much so that during the Ayutthaya period said to be from 1351 to 1767, flying kites around the Royal Properties was forbidden for fear it would damage the ornate towers and detailed architecture. The main venue for this festival is Sanam Luang, which is the large park in front of the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It is a beautiful sight indeed to see thousands of kites against the stunning skyline of the Sanam Luang Park. During this festival a kite fighting competition is held annually. Tourists to Bangkok during this period are welcome to join the festival as kites can be bought in many places in the city. Kites maybe bought from the hundreds of street vendors to stores to shops in the many malls that cover the city. This indeed is one of the best non-tourist activity a visitor could partake in!
