Kiwiana And Nz Design - Representing Your Kiwi Pride

, shell ashtrays, and a cookbook may not appear terribly relevant objects. But to a significant number of Kiwis (New Zealanders), such items assume significant importance as major symbols of Kiwiana! What is Kiwiana? It should be described as all the weird and wonderful quirky things from our nations history that contribute to our sense of nationhood our NZ identity.

What is a Kiwi?

To appreciate Kiwiana, itis useful to initially know what actually a kiwi is. A kiwi is a flightless nocturnal native bird, and the national bird of New Zealand. It has a elongated beak with nostrils on the end, and rumages about in the night eating small insects. However, over the years, New Zealanders have become known as 'Kiwis' also. There is a unique 'kiwi' sense of humour, a kiwi 'do-it-yourself' way of lie, and Kiwiana means the things that contribute to our sense of being Kiwi. Just to confuse things, the kiwifruit is often refered to as a 'kiwi' in Europe and America and 'Kiwi' nugget (shoe polish) is recognised universally, even though it is an Australian product!

The Kiwifruit, often simply called a 'kiwi' is of Chinese origin, but grows throughout our country. It was originally refered to as a 'Chinese Gooseberry' by NZ'ers, however once New Zealand started to export kiwis, it was decided to give them a fresh name. 'Kiwifruit' was the decision, because it would associate them with NZ. The choice was timely, and NZ enjoyed huge exports during the worldwide Kiwifruit boom. While kiwifruit are now grown throughout the world, you can always tell if a kiwifruit is from New Zealand, as it will be branded 'Zespri'.

Where Do You Purchase Kiwiana?

Most charity and souvenir shops have a great variety of Kiwiana, but if you want the real thing, go to one of the thousands of garage sales that are held throughout NZ every weekend.
