Knee High Socks verses Legwarmers
Knee high socks and legwarmers have been keeping ladies' pins warm for years. Legwarmers will forever be associated with 1980s fashion, whilst knee high socks are classically linked to school girl chic. Both types of leg wear go in and out of fashion and can be worn with a variety of different looks. This article attempts to address a long running fashion debate; knee high socks verses legwarmers, which is better?
Knee high pros
Knee high socks are more timeless than legwarmers and therefore won't go out of fashion as quickly. They are also more flexible than legwarmers and can be worn with a wide variety of looks. They work really well if you're going for a very girly Alice in Wonderland or Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz look, or work if you're trying something a bit more school girl such as a pleated skirt or pinafore. Stripy knee high socks can be rocked up to look punk, whilst thick knit knee high socks go perfectly with this season's countryside look.
Knee high socks are also a great transitional layer which will take you from the warmth of summer to the cooler days of autumn. When the winter cold really sets in knee high socks can be worn over tights or under trousers to keep your legs and feet warm.
Knee high cons
It's rare for knee high socks to look smart and sophisticated. They work brilliantly with a kooky Indie style; however, if you're looking for something more grown up and smart you're better off with tights. That said; however, knee high black socks can look quite smart when worn with the right outfit.
Legwarmer pros
Legwarmers are fun and can add a real retro look to your outfit. Their association with 1980s keep fit make them great accessories for sports and working out as they add some warmth without making you too hot. The loose fit of leg warmers means that they can easily be worn over the bottom of trousers enabling them to add some much needed extra warmth when worn under boots.
Legwarmer cons
Legwarmers are almost a novelty item and are therefore unlikely to ever really look chic. If you want to be taken seriously at an interview or prestigious event, legwarmers are probably the last accessory you would pick. Leg warmers often come in bright neon colours which are hard to coordinate with other outfits and look very conspicuous. Their association with disco, roller-skating and 1980s fitness makes it hard to wear them with more day to day clothes. Having had their peak in the 1970s and 1980s it's a challenge to make legwarmers seem new, modern and relevant to today's fashion.
Overall, due to their classic appeal, flexibility and variety of styles, knee high socks seem a far better accessory than leg warmers. Leg warmers can look dated and bizarre and are hard to make look even remotely sophisticated. Knee high sock's girly charm makes them a fashion classic.
