Knee Injuries, Can Knee Braces Help?
The knee, injuries, and knee supports and braces to help prevent and treat injury.
During dynamic knee performance, knee braces and knee supports help to stabilise the knee. Knee braces and knee supports offer three levels of support: primary, intensive, and extreme. There are also three functions: prevent, protect, and assist.
The medical name for the knee joint is the tibia femoral. It is the largest joint in the body. The femur and the tibia are the two bones that make up the knee joint. The strength of the knee joint is dependent on the muscles and ligaments which surround it. When there is injury to the knee, choosing the correct knee brace or support will help to strengthen the knee and provide additional support.
The four ligaments that provide strength to the knee joint are the collateral ligament, lateral collateral ligament, anterior cruciate ligament, and posterior cruciate ligament. You can help to prevent injury to these by wearing a preventative knee brace or knee support.
The medial collateral ligament is located on the inside of the knee joint. It spans from the medial femoral epicondyle to the tibia. The role of this ligament is to prevent excessive seizure of the knee. It is recommended to wear a knee support such as an elastic slip on knee brace during exercise to help prevent overstress of the joint.
The lateral collateral ligament is located on the outside of the knee joint. It spans from the lateral femoral epicondyle to the top of the fibula. The role of this ligament is to prevent excessive pulling of the knee. Again, an elastic slip on knee support might help to prevent an injury from occurring.
The anterior cruciate ligament extends across from the tibia and goes in on the lateral femoral condyle. The role of this ligament is to prevent the excessive latter movement of the femur on the tibia. If an injury has occurred you should consult your doctor and he, or she may recommend that you wear a knee brace, possibly one with metal stays in it.
The posterior cruciate ligament extends anteromedially from the tibia posterior to the medial femoral condyle. The role of this ligament is to prevent the excessive forward progression of the femur on the tibia. If injury has occurred you should consult your doctor. You may be required to wear a hinged knee brace or a motion control knee brace.
If you have had an operation on your knee, you may be required to wear a post operative knee brace or or knee support to help in your recovery.
There are many different types of knee supports. Some offer thermal warming, these are usaually made out of neoprene. There are knee supports that are elastic pull on, others are wrap around which make them easier to get on and off. Some knee braces have metal stays to stabilise the knee joint. Others are motion control which limit movement of the knee. It is important to speak to your doctor to find out which one will suit you best. E&OE
