The Defense Base Act of America was created to help the workers associated with the Armed Forces. Not only in the U.S.A., there are several people who work as contractors for the military organizations in foreign countries. When they are injured on the job, this act makes them eligible for compensation for their injuries. The criteria for receiving compensation are that the person in discussion has to be injured on the job, must be associated with the US government agencies that are responsible for military action, must be involved with services that are beneficial to the US Armed Forces or are contractors for the US government agencies or agencies related to U.S. Foreign Assistance Act. In any case, the one thing that is mandatory to be eligible for the compensation is that the work must be beyond U.S. soil. It is intriguing to learn that compensation is available to people irrespective of their nationality.

The injured worker needs to notify his/her employer at the first possible occasion after being injured. It is also necessary to provide documents in writing, so that the employer may take necessary steps to retrieve compensation from the government. Be it an injury, or death, compensation is available. In case of death, the employee's survivors receive the money. If he/she is survived by a spouse or one child, the compensation is half of the weekly salary. However, if there are two survivors, then the compensation amounts to two thirds of the weekly wage. For Defense Base Act injuries, disabilities, and loss of limb, the employee gets two thirds of the employee's weakly earnings.

In the case of non U.S. residents, compensation is given as a lump sum of money. For a Defense Base Act injury, money is given only if it is a permanent disability. In case of a death, the onetime amount is given either to spouse and children or to dependent parents.
