Alcoholism is never an easy disease to cure. The problem of alcoholism may not be rooted on one problem but two. Factors that cause one to be an alcoholic vary from one person to another. There are studies that support the belief that alcoholics usually have 1 or 2 parents who are also alcoholics. This idea led many to assume that alcohol addiction is genetic. Other studies also revealed that alcoholism is associated with other mental diseases like depression, anxiety and other mood disorders. The lack of self control for alcohol intake is a result of deeper causes like mental ailments.

As varied as the causes of addiction so is the plethora of treatment for alcohol addiction. There are many approaches studied and are being studied to help solve the problem of alcoholism. Alcoholism doesn't trouble the drinker only but also his family and community. The number of fatal accidents resulting from drunk driving is increasing every year despite State measures in avoiding them from happening. It's therefore wise to learn and be aware on how alcohol addiction can be stopped and treated.

There are about more than 10,000 alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs in the United States. There are approximately twelve million people addicted to alcohol that needs treatment. It's best to understand the types of treatment available in order to identify what suits best the patient. The first program of treatment for alcoholism was started by Alcoholic Anonymous. This was founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Bob Smith. The approach of this type of program is enlisted in twelve steps. These steps help an alcoholic beat and recover from alcohol addiction. These concepts are still applied in many rehabilitation facilities around the globe.

Alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs in recent years have progressed to address problems on withdrawal symptoms. Some therapy may be done outside a rehabilitation center. This type of treatment involves counseling, group sessions for a number of hours but the patient gets to go back home at night and weekends. There are sober living homes also referred as half way residences that provide a structured environment for the alcoholic and certain conditions are given that should be met. These conditions include paying rent, having curfew, having a job and holding group meetings to help other alcoholics. Detoxification is done in the healthcare facility for individuals who have outpatient treatments. Inpatient treatment facilities are also referred as residential rehab centers where the patient stays full-time for a specific time period. This kind of treatment is applicable to those who are suffering from severe alcohol addiction. There is greater monitoring on the improvement and treatment of an addict in this form of treatment. When considering for treatment, it is strongly recommended to do enough research on what type of therapy suits best for the addict.
