A desiccant is defined as a substance that has the ability to desiccate (to dry or dehydrate)

Desiccant packets have proven to be very effective in controlling the relative humidity in a closed environment. There are several different types of desiccants that can be packaged to meet specific applications. Heres an overview of some of the commonly used desiccants:


Silica gel: Though it is referred to as gel, these are actually hard granules that show excellent adsorption properties. This material is actually a synthetically manufactured version of silicon dioxide. Indicating silica gel is slightly different from regular silica gel in that it changes color when it is begins to reach its full adsorption capacity. When the color has fully changed, the desiccant can either be replaced or regenerated.

Clay: This is a naturally occurring material and can be easily regenerated, thus providing very cost-effective application as a desiccant.


Molecular sieves: These materials have a very dense and intricate network of pores, thus adsorbing moisture and vapors in its empty cavities. This is in fact, a manufactured version of Zeolite and shows exceptional adsorption properties even in the most demanding conditions. However, it is one of the more expensive desiccants available today.

Activated charcoal: This material is also commonly seen in the form of desiccant packets. Activated carbon shows exceptional performance when used as an odor removal substance, and it placed along with meat and vegetables to keep them fresh longer.
