Know The Difference Between Hdmi And Dvi Before You Use One

If you are a 'home entertainment system' enthusiast

, you must have noticed that equipment has become more and more advanced with the progress of technology. But never-the-less there are many of us who do not know what are the specifications or features that we should look for when we are buying one such system.

With different types of connectivity involved, many of us are unsure of what type of connectivity we should really use to get the best out of our flat screen TV. When you think about hooking up our digital CD with your fat screen TV that you have just bought, you expect to have the true digital resolution played on the screen. You hear about HDMI and DVI cables used for connecting your TV with a digital source, but you are not being able to fathom what they are and which one you should use. So let me explain this difference.

A cable is needed to connect your Blu-ray or any other digital system with your TV. This cable should be able to carry the digital signal from the DVD player to your TV. You can use two types of cables, DVI (Digital Visual Interface) or HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). Both of these cables would deliver digital video signals to your flat screen TV in its purest form since there are no conversion factors involved as is in case of analog ones.

However, DVI has not been designed to carry the digital audio signals to your TV and you would need to use an extra cable to get the digital audio from your DVD to your TV. More-over, DVI has different connectors for different systems. These connector types are the ones found in computer hardware, and are used in video equipment as well.

HDMI has one type of connector. It has USB which slides in your DVD player and the other end goes into your TV. Further, unlike DVI, HDMI carries digital audio signal and you do not need to use a separate cable for transmitting audio from your DVD player. The most important difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI incorporates content security that is called High Definition Content Protection, which in short is termed as HDCP.

Therefore, HDMI provides a greater security and ease of connectivity of your digital audio and video signals. HDMI is still undergoing changes and three versions of this cable are already in the market having new features added on.

In spite of these differences, a compatibility factor exists between HDMI and DVI. There is a backward compatibility available which provides you with the means to connect your digital systems with DVI to your new flat screen TV which has a HDMI connector system. In this case you would need a HDMI to DVI cable converter to watch the video, and use a separate cable for transmitting the audio signals. The design of HDMI has been based on DVI, and hence certain compatibility does exist between the two.
