Know The Exhausts Of Your Car
Exhaust refers to the gases released from an engine
, because of the combustion reaction. The entire system, which expels the gases from the engine, is called exhaust system, which consists of many parts. Combustion reaction takes place in the combustion chamber where the fuel and air are burnt by means of a spark.
Parts of the exhaust system include:
Exhaust valve: A regulator kind of a control device, which pushes out the exhaust gases from the cylinder to the nest stage in the exhaust stroke. There are usually two exhaust valves used in order to increase the flow of the exhaust gases.
Exhaust manifold: Manifold collects the exhaust gases from the cylinders and mixes them into a single pipe. They are made up of cast iron or stainless steel. Tube type manifolds are also known as header or extractor.
1. Header is used to improve the performance of the engine and to reduce the backpressure created in the manifold.
2. Each cylinder is provided with an exhaust pipe and commonly collected into a single tube called the collector.
Catalytic converter: This equipment is attached to the exhaust system, to convert harmful poisonous emissions to less harmful emissions. Catalytic converters convert carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides to
Car spares, water vapor and nitrogen gas, which are less poisonous; by means of a catalytic reaction comprising of oxidation and reduction process. Catalytic converter helps in reducing pollution in the atmosphere.
Oxygen sensor: It is a device, which deducts the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust stream. By doing so, the engine adds or reduces the air or fuel mixture to get a better air fuel ratio.
Muffler: It is a device used to reduce the amount of noise coming from the engine/exhaust due to combustion process. It is known as silencer. It is placed at the rear side of the car. The silencer works on the principle that when two waveforms of sound are generated out of phase, the net result is total cancellation of sound leading to zero waveform. Types of muffler include:
1. Multiple baffle
2. Turbo muffler
3. Straight through muffler
4. Steel muffler
Exhaust pipe: Tubing expels the exhaust gases from the manifold to the muffler and out of the tail pipe.
Tail pipe: It expels the exhaust gases out of the car. It is the last pipe in the exhaust system.
Repeated checks on the exhaust system are necessary to ensure the life and performance of the car.
