Know The Latest Lake Tahoe Road Conditions Before You Get On The Highway

Before you set out for a visit to Lake Tahoe, keep in mind that the weather in the mountains tends to change quickly, so you need to make sure to check current Lake Tahoe road conditions. While there are places along the way where you can get maps and ask about the latest weather information, remember that you are probably not getting up to date information.

The most up to date information can be found on the website of the California Highway Patrol, which allows you to find driving conditions for any numbered highway in the state. Another place which is an even better resource is VacationRentals4LakeTahoe.com, which pulls information from the Highway Patrol and also offers maps which show road closures and detours in the Tahoe area.

How Should You Get To Lake Tahoe?

From Sacramento, Reno or the San Francisco Bay, you can take I-80 to Truckee and then get on CA 89 South. This will take you to the North Shore of the lake, near Squaw Valley and Tahoe City.

If you're headed to the south shore of Lake Tahoe, use US 50 if you're coming from Sacramento or if you're coming from Reno, NV, take US 395 South, then US 50 West once you're past Carson City.

The weather in the High Sierra can go from mild to ferocious without much warning, so you need to be prepared for your trip by knowing the latest Tahoe road conditions before you get behind the wheel.

Nine Winter Driving Tips for Lake Tahoe Roads

* If there are signs telling you to put on snow chains or if you are told to do so by a police officer or highway patrol officer, do it at once.

* If the roads are icy or if there is heavy fog, drive slowly and carefully. Freezing temperatures and rain or even fog can lead to very dangerous black ice. Maintain a little more distance between yourself and other drivers and if you have put snow chains on your tires, drive no faster than 30 mph.

* Get gas before you get to the area; gas is harder to come by and more costly in the mountains.

* Give yourself plenty of extra travel time in the winter, since the weather can mean slower speeds.

* Keep emergency supplies handy: a blanket and warm clothes, a de-icer, ice scraper and shovel. You might also want to have some water and food on hand just in case.

* Keep an extra car key in your wallet and have anyone with you do the same in case you lock yourself out of your car. Make sure to keep a cell phone on you along with emergency numbers and always bring a map.

* Make sure to inflate your tired properly and keep snow chains and tools for mounting in your trunk. Since you might have to put on your chains at night, it's a good idea to have a flashlight as well.

* Add antifreeze to your radiator and windshield wiper fluid to prevent freezing.

* Check your heater, defroster and brakes to make sure they're in working order before you leave.

Some roads may be closed at time due to severe weather, though there are other highways which are open year round, including US 50 and US 395 to Carson City and the Mount Rose (SR 431) highway to Reno, NV. There is also US 50 over Echo Summit, CA 207 over the Kingsbury Grade and the CA 88 to Stockton.
