Generally salmon is the name of several species of fish belonging to the family Salmonidae

. In the same way many other fish of this family are termed as trout .

One will find the difference in the lives of salmon and trout as salmon had a migratory life in comparison to the residential behaviour of trout. Salmon lives in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans along with the Great Lakes . Mostly salmon are anadromous as they born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean and then later returns to the fresh water reproduction. Salmon was crossing-over to many streams allowing salmon to make new streams crowdy like those emerging as a glacier retreats. In most of the species of Pacific salmon the mature individuals die within a few days and few of them during spawning which is a trait known as semelparity.

In most of the species of the salmon that survives to spawn more than once and the post-spawning mortality is found to be quite high . For laying the roe, the female salmon makes the usage of tail, creating low pressure zone, lifting gravel for swepting downstream, excavating the shallow depression also known as redd. These salmon redd sometimes carries eggs more than five thousand covering 30 square feet. These salmon eggs mostly ranges from orange to red in color. Many males approaches the female mostly in her redd, depositing his sperm, and milting over the roe. Later the female covers the eggs moving the gravel at edge of the depression before starting to make another redd. In this way the female salmon will make atleast 7 redds before the supply of eggs is over. After this the salmon dies within the period of spawning. So salmon gives time to atleast five years in the open ocean becoming sexually mature. One will see the adult salmon returning to its natal stream to spawn. So the atlantic salmon spend four years at sea and when the fish feeding is over it is termed as grilse in UK and Ireland.
