Asian flush is a common condition that is more popularly known as plain alcohol allergy

. As this term suggests, it is a medical condition that becomes obvious to the naked eye when a sufferer drinks alcohol. If you have reason to think that you may have this ailment, there are a number of things that you need to know about it.

#1- Asians aren't the only ones affected.

Statistics show that around 50% of Asians are affected by this condition. The term is a bit misleading though simply because Asians are not the only victims. People of Caucasian ancestry can also suffer from it. You'll know for sure if you have it if you drink a glass or two of anything alcoholic. If you begin to experience a couple of different symptoms, then you definitely have an allergy to alcohol.

Regardless of who has it, the condition can be a source of embarrassment and frustration. You don't want to look like a cherry in front of your friends or business associates when you're on a night out. The most common way to avoid it is not to drink at all but that would mean missing out on all the fun.

#2- The symptoms can be uncomfortable and disturbing.

Red skin, especially the sections on your face is probably what you'll get first when you have your first glass. This is not the last symptom you'll get though. Eventually, the red areas will appear splotchy and little rashes can grow on these areas. Naturally, they will be very itchy and a bit warm to the touch. The signs on your skin are nothing compared to the other alcohol allergy symptoms. The condition can restrict breathing and cause headaches.

Some people prefer not to pay attention to the condition. This isn't the best course of action though. You will feel a great deal of discomfort with these symptoms and there is a huge chance that you will not be able to keep your hands from scratching all over. Even if you can hold back from doing so, people around you will still notice your unusual appearance.

#3- Biology is involved in all this.

People who have allergic reactions to alcohol have biology to blame. When you drink, alcohol is treated in much the same way as anything else that you eat or drink. The problem is that in people who have an allergy to alcohol, alcohol is not completely processed. The enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 is not active in people with Asian flush. The toxin acetaldehyde that is packaged with all alcoholic drinks stays in its original form. This then causes allergy symptoms.

Because nature is to blame, you may not be able to find a sure shot solution for your condition. There are some people who drink aspirin or other medicines and claim to find some relief after the intake. There is no medical proof of the effectiveness of these medications though especially since they are meant to relieve other conditions. You might do more damage to yourself by self-medicating.

No one wants to have an alcohol allergy. If the red skin starts to show though, it's an absolute must to try to find correct information about the condition. Information is simply your best weapon against the symptoms.
