Know Your Stone Care: Crystallization

Crystallization is the result of the chemical reaction on the surface of stone

. The crystallization process creates a high gloss finish on stone floors and helps create a slip resistant surface. In the crystallization process, heat of friction is used to give the floor more shine. Various products can be used for this, and the exact process will vary slightly depending on what products you choose to useremember to follow the instructions for mixing our diluting your chemical as described on the label. But, generally, this is how the crystallization process should work:

Equipment needed:

Floor Machine

Floor Pad (This depends on the type of floor and chemical you're using, but usually a Steel Wool Pad #0 or #1, or a 3M Purple Pad is preferable).

Squeegee

Strong Stirring Utensil

Chemical Product

Stir the product with a sturdy, strong stirring tool or mix according to the specifications on the product label. Section off a small area to work in. (We recommend a 44 or 66 space.) The surface must be clean and dry, with all waxes, floor finishes, and other coatings removed.

Spread 6 ounces of the product in a circle in the area you're working in. Then mist the area with water.

Use the floor machine to work the product in left and right rows, making three to four passes. Go over the same area again with forward and reverse rows. If the product dries out while you are working, mist with water again.

To check your progress, use either the squeegee or towels to clean the surface and judge the results. If the results are not as desired, repeat the previous steps. Count the number of passes needed for an acceptable finish, and use that amount on each section of the floor for uniformity.

After desired shine is achieved, clean the surface with stone cleaner and seal if desired.
