Know more about Hot Tapping
Hot tapping, sometimes known as pressure tapping, is a process of connecting existing pipeline or vessels without the need to empty the connection section of pipe of the vessel. It means that work can then be done on the line without shutting down the entire process. It can be feasibly done on pipes that carry water, sewage, natural gas, steam, chemicals, and petroleum products, and moreover, it can also be performed on pipes or vessels made out of any type of material. The process can be done on offshore platforms, gas production plants, refineries, and at nay other location where a pressurized tubular system exists.
The first and foremost stem in line stopping employs the use of a hole-saw to generate a hole in the pipe into which a plugging head is inserted. It also enables pressure to be contained, vented, and removed from a running system.
There are various benefits of using this process. It allows for continuous operations as pressure is thoroughly contained. Work can be done on that section of pipe without shutting down other sections. The system is extremely modular, and can process various applications. Moreover, it is limited only by the amount of pressure that has to be contained. It means that if an option to contain the pressure is available, practically any size hole can be cut into the pipe.
The flexibility property of hot tapping is one of the major reasons why many companies are choosing it as the way of working on pipelines. It can be done automatically or manually, and hot tapping can be performed on both surface pipelines and sub sea pipelines. Various power options are available, including hydraulic and pneumatic power systems. The drill lengths can be of various sizes and it's possible to bore a hole anywhere from half an inch to several feet in diameter. If required, larger holes can be made in pipes. This process is considered as extremely safe and secure as it doesn't cause any harm to existing pipelines or processes.
Hot tapping is usually done on material such as carbon steel, stainless steel, cement lined pipe, fiberglass, or plastic pipes. There materials can be feasibly connected to new sections of pipe. Hence, hot tapping can also be performed on pipes made out of materials that can't be smoothly welded or sealed, including transite, cast iron, and carbon steel. This is performed by using a bolt-on tapping or plug. In few cases, a custom developed product can really be required to connect the pipes.
Allied Pipe freezing isn't always the best solution, and in these cases, APS is able to offer clients an Under Pressure Drilling, or 'Hot Tapping' service.
