Knowing The Potential Fosamax Side Effects

Part of the bisphosphonate drug group, Fosamax is mainly used to treat osteoporosis and several other bone disorders

. It is manufactured and distributed by Merck, which lost its generic patent on Fosamax in 2008. Currently Merck is facing a lawsuit filed by two Illinois women who claimed that Fosamaxs medical benefits were largely exaggerated.

However, while there are many Fosamax users who reported no problem associated with its use, the drug has been known for several adverse side effects. The common side effects include: abdominal pain, musculoskeletal pain, nausea, heart burn, irritation of the esophagus, difficult or painful swallowing, chest pain, headache, constipation and diarrhea. While there are other common side effects that are possible with Fosamax, it is important that if users happen to begin showing any of those side effects that they see a doctor as soon as possible.

In recent studies which have been made by the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Health Research Institute, results have shown that Fosamax and other bisphoponates have the ability to raise the risk of developing bone necrosis, otherwise known as bone death. However, the studies also continues in saying the condition is still rare, occurring in one in every 20,00 people every year, and that Fosamax users are at three times higher risk in contracting the illness.

The most common type of bone necrosis for Fosamax Patients is osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). The Professors of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Miami published a research study in 2005 entitled "Bisphosphonate-Induced Exposed Bone (Osteonecrosis/Osteopetrosis) of the Jaws: Risk Factors, Recognition, Prevention and Treatment. The results from the study showed that ONJ was most commonly seen in patients who are recovering from cancer and are receiving Fosamax through intravenous injection. The study went as far as saying that the best way to avoid ONJ is to reduce the body's exposure to bisphosphonate drugs and also surgical procedures involving the jaw.

Often patients who are using Fosamax do not feel any adverse side effects. However, it is increasing important to know these side effects since the number of Fosamax Lawsuits are on the rise. If you believe that you are showing side effects caused by your Fosamax use, consult the doctor as soon as possible.
