Knowing The Purposes Of Endoscopy

The internal body structures can then be seen on a color monitor by the physician

. The endoscope can be inserted through the mouth, down the throat, or through the rectum.

Endoscopy is often used to evaluate severe stomach pain, ulcers, gastritis, digestive tract bleeding, and to investigate polyps or masses in the colon. Possible complications of endoscopy include bleeding; tear in the abdominal wall, and reactions to sedation medications.

An endoscopy is performed under sedation, through an IV. The patient usually wakes about an hour after the procedure is done.

General anesthesia is given in special circumstances, but is typically not necessary. You can prepare for the procedure by fasting 6-8 hours prior to the endoscopy, or however long the doctor recommends.

You will also most likely be given a laxative to clear the bowels prior to surgery. There are many types of endoscopy procedures.

An arthroscopy is a way for a surgeon to look into your joint with a camera. The most common type of arthroscopy is arthroscopic knee surgery.

Other common arthroscopic surgeries include shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, and hip arthroscopy. A bronchoscopy is a lung test where the lungs can be visualized through a camera that is attached to a device called a bronchoscope.

The bronchoscope is inserted into your airway, usually through your nose. The doctor can then view images of your larynx, trachea and bronchioles. The purpose of a bronchoscopy is to examine tissues or collect fluid that is secreted from your lungs and to determine the location and extent of your lung damage.

The bronchoscopy is also used to obtain a sample of your lung tissue for further study, to discover whether a tumor can be removed from the body through surgery, and to diagnose places in your lungs that are bleeding. A colonoscopy is a test that doctors use to look for and remove adenomas and polyps, growths in the colon that if left untreated, may turn into colon cancer.

This test is also used to screen for colon cancer itself. A colposcopy is an exam that allows the doctor to examine the cervix more closely.

The doctor is aided by the use of a colposcope, a lighted instrument that rests outide of the vagina during the exam. The colposcope magnifies the cervix and somewhat resembles a microscope.

Cystoscopy is a procedure that uses a flexible fiber optic scope inserted through the urethra into the urinary bladder. The physician fills the bladder with water and inspects the interior of the bladder.

The image seen through the cystoscope may also be viewed on a color monitor and recorded on videotape for later evaluation. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure used to identify stones, tumors, or narrowing in the bile ducts.

The procedure is done through an endoscope. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is an examination of the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum with a small camera (flexible endoscope) which is inserted down the throat.

Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical technique in which short, narrow tubes (trochars) are inserted into the abdomen through small (less than one centimeter) incisions. Through these trochars, long, narrow instruments are inserted.

The surgeon uses these instruments to manipulate, cut, and sew tissue. Laryngoscopy is examination of the larynx (voice box) using a small mirror held just below the back of your palate, or a rigid or flexible viewing tube called a laryngoscope placed in your mouth.

Sigmoidoscopy is an internal examination of the lower large bowel (colon) and rectum, using an instrument called a sigmoidoscope. Thoracoscopy is an in-depth report on the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of lung cancer.

A bone marrow biopsy is the removal of soft tissue, called marrow, from inside bone. Bone marrow is found in the hollow part of most bones.

Bone marrow helps form blood cells. A cold knife cone biopsy (conization) is a procedure to get a sample of abnormal tissue from the cervix for further examination.
