Kumana Bird Park- Home To A Wondrous Variety Of Winged Fauna

Many would know that the tropical island of Sri Lanka is rich in rain forests which are teeming with life in all shapes and sizes

. Some of the rain forests and government-protected nature reserves found in Sri Lanka are magical parts of the country that have drawn in visitors by the thousands for decades. Some of the rainforests in the country are so abundant in wildlife that environmentalists believe a significant number of never-before-seen flora and fauna lie secreted within in places like the Sinharaja Rainforest. So, if youre a nature-lover looking for that perfect destination full of great forests and waterfalls, Sri Lanka is definitely the place for you.

Previously known as Yala East Park, the Kumana National Park got its current name in 2006. The park is located approximately 243 miles away from the capital city of Colombo and is one of the most enchanting tourist attractions in the country. A bountiful haven for environmentalists and nature-lovers alike, this slice of paradise is home to a variety of both migratory and resident bird species. One of the main reasons why the Kumana Bird Park is a preferred habitat is due to the fact that there are a number of tanks and lagoons. The marshy lands around these watery areas are perfect breeding grounds for a variety of insects upon which many of the wading birds such as storks and herons prey.

Some of the most common birds which can be spotted at the park are the Indian pond heron, glossy ibis, Indian cormorant, little egret, purple swamphen, Asian openbill and the great egret. This perfect habitat rich in plantlife is the ideal natural stomping ground for its wild inhabitants such as the mugger crocodile, Indian black turtle, the fishing cat, the European otter and the golden jackal.
