Although Sri Lanka is regarded as a small island located south of the Indian peninsula
in the Indian Ocean, it is a landmass which is home to a number of indigenous animals. Although some of these creatures such a amphibians including nannophrys guentheri and philautus adspersus have since met with extinction, some have been able to meet with the evolutionary demands they have been faced with over the years. As Sri Lanka is a tropical island the humid weather conditions and the sheer amount of rainfall is quite heavy which has been the reason why a significant number of fish species call this their home. Among a long list of species Sri Lankan Sweet Lips, Colombo Damsel, Black Ruby Barb and the Cherry Barb are some of the varieties that come to mind.
The tear shaped island of Sri Lanka is home to 10 national parks which are simply teeming with life and just waiting to be explored. Kumana Bird Sanctuary or Kumana National Park is located in the south eastern part of the island covering a total landmass of 18,149 hectares. The Kumana Villu area is a favourite swamp area which is a favourite feeding ground for pelicans, spoonbills, herons, painted storks and white ibis. The lush vegetation and the abundance of insect and swamp creatures makes this breathtaking park a haven for a variety of migratory and indigenous species of avifauna.
