One of the major differences between ebook readers is their screen technology -- whether they have an LCD screen or an E-Ink screen. When comparing devices for the purpose of ebook reading, this is an important consideration.

First, you should understand that the types of devices that have LCD screens are very different from the types of devices that use E-Ink screens. They are so different that they really aren't comparable, but these devices are being marketed against each other because they both happen to be able to display electronic books.

LCD devices include tablet computers like the iPad or the new Sony Galaxy Tab, as well as the iPhone or iPod Touch, most modern cell phones (especially those that have a touch screen), and your laptop screen or flat-screen computer monitor.

E-Ink screens are used on dedicated ebook reading devices like the Kindle, Nook, BeBook, and others.

Let's consider a few of the key differences between the two:

LCD Devices:

LCD (liquid crystal display) screens emanate their own light, or are back-lit. Because of this, they use a lot of battery power. A laptop can commonly run out of power after a few hours, and cell phones commonly last less than a day with normal use.

These screens were made to display everything visual, including videos, photos, multimedia websites, all of your office documents, games, etc. LCD is great for that because it is versatile enough to handle any display situation.

In terms of functionality, devices with LCD screens are usually do-everything gadgets. If they're not a full computer, they are a tablet computer like an iPad, or a small handheld device like your cell phone.

E-Ink Devices:

An E-Ink ebook reader can run on one battery charge for about 12,000 page turns, which works out to about a month of regular use. Battery power is not used up by a light source or a drain on power from running games or other applications.

E-Ink screens were engineered to be as close to paper as possible. The screens are matte instead of glossy, which eliminates any glare from light sources like a lamp, or the sun if you're reading outside or near a window. The matte screen of an ebook reader does not cause eye strain like you'd get from reading from an LCD screen for a long period of time. E-Ink was specifically created to display text, and words remain crisp and readable when enlarged, which is useful if you are zooming in on the text.

Long-term reading is best done with a device that was made specifically for that task. Reading on an ebook reader with E-Ink will be easy on your eyes and you won't have to worry about running out of battery power. LCD devices can function as ebook readers because they have the capability to store and open ebook files, but the screen technology was not intended for serious reading.
